Problem

Roughly half of all food produced in Canada is lost or wasted along the supply chain while 1 in 4 Canadians are food insecure.

Avoidable Food Waste

Canada’s food supply chain produces 8.83M metric tonnes of surplus food each year.

Food Wa$te

The value of avoidable food wasted annually is now a staggering $58B.

Environmental Impact

Canada’s avoidable food waste issue generates 26M tonnes of methane gas.

Food Insecurity

1 in 4 Canadians are food insecure while the total amount of surplus food we produce can feed over 17M people.

Food Banks

There were 2M+ visits to Canada’s food banks in just one month; a 90% increase since 2019.

Food Recovery

Only 4% of avoidable food waste is being rescued or redistributed across Canada.

Global Impact

According to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, it is estimated that every pound of food thrown away results in 3.8 pounds of methane gas. This greenhouse gas has a global warming potential of 25x that of carbon dioxide and is 84x more potent in the first 20 years.

  • 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions stems from human caused food waste.
  • Global food waste is the 3rd largest greenhouse gas emitter behind China and the USA.
  • Reducing food waste has the potential to draw 87 gigatons of greenhouse gas out of the atmosphere.
